Walking the dots

Apart from simple mental arithmetic, another test involves performing a physical activity simultaneously — called “Walking the Dots.”

In this exercise, the examiner provides an A4 sheet with two lines of circles. Each line consists of circles placed in sequence, but with slightly different spacing and patterns.

The candidate is given two pens or pencils, one in each hand. The task is to trace along the circles alternately: left hand, then right hand, switching sides at every step. Upon reaching the end of the line, tap once and trace back in the opposite direction.

The examiner then gives signals by tapping on the table:

  • One tap = move along the left-hand line
  • second tap = move along the right-hand line
  • Then continue alternating: left → right → left → right, and so on

To make the test more demanding, the examiner may vary the rhythm of the taps — sometimes faster, sometimes slower — creating time pressure.

Meanwhile, the candidate will also be asked questions, such as:

  • General personal questions
  • Quick mental calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or time differences)
  • Spelling words forward or backward
  • Recalling numbers in reverse order (e.g., phone numbers)

The purpose is to assess multitasking ability — listening, visual tracking, hand coordination, and mental processing all at once.

One important tip: never skip a circle. If you miss one, you may repeat a circle to keep the left and right lines balanced, but it must be done smoothly; otherwise, the examiner will easily notice the mistake.

This test is both challenging and enjoyable, giving a clear measure of the candidate’s ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.
