Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds that form high in the sky, typically above 20,000 feet (6,000 meters). They are composed mostly of ice crystals and usually indicate fair weather. However, when they thicken and spread out, they can signal that a change in the weather is coming, such as a warm front or approaching storm.
Cumulus clouds are large, puffy clouds with a flat base and a rounded top, often resembling cotton balls. They usually form at lower altitudes, around 2,000 to 6,000 feet (600–2,000 meters). Cumulus clouds are typically associated with fair weather, but if they grow vertically into cumulonimbus clouds, they can produce thunderstorms.
Stratus clouds are low, gray, and often cover the entire sky like a blanket. They form at altitudes up to 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) and are usually associated with overcast weather and light drizzle or mist. These clouds rarely produce heavy rain but can create a gloomy atmosphere.
Nimbus clouds are rain-bearing clouds, often dark and dense. The term “nimbus” is used to describe clouds that produce precipitation, such as rain, snow, or sleet. Cumulonimbus clouds are a type of nimbus cloud that can generate heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail, and even tornadoes.
Cumulonimbus clouds are towering clouds that can reach up to 60,000 feet (18,000 meters). They are associated with severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and lightning. Pilots pay special attention to these clouds because flying through them can be dangerous due to turbulence and severe weather phenomena.
6. Altostratus and Altocumulus Clouds (เมฆอัลโตสเตรตัส & เมฆอัลโตคิวมูลัส)
Altostratus clouds are gray or blue-gray mid-level clouds that cover the sky and often indicate continuous rain or snow. Altocumulus clouds appear as white or gray patches with a textured pattern and may signal instability in the atmosphere. Both types form between 6,500 and 20,000 feet (2,000–6,000 meters).
